Retired 1st Lt. Joyce Christman is a former signal corps officer in the U.S. Army and is the director of product development at Your6™. She has written more than 680 unique job descriptions for military occupational specialties and more than 300 mission statements and objectives as part of the Your6™ translation tool.
After graduating high school, Christman enlisted in the Army, where she became a military police officer before joining the Army’s Green to Gold Active Duty Option Program, a two-year program that provides eligible active duty enlisted soldiers an opportunity to complete a baccalaureate or two-year degree and earn a commission as an officer. She studied sociology at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, earned her degree and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps.
After nine years in the Army, Christman was discharged as a first lieutenant and—unsure of how to transition into civilian life at a time when female veterans were less common—went back to school to earn a graduate degree in counseling from Rider University in New Jersey.
While the social sciences are her passion, Christman faced several obstacles in landing a position in that field, due to the corporate world’s fundamental misunderstanding of her roles and responsibilities in the Army—where she managed 210 people and millions of dollars of equipment—and a general misperception of veterans as violent, aggressive or inept, inaccuracies Christman is always quick to correct.
Christman, who worked her whole life to retire early, came out of retirement a year ago to work for Your6™ because it combines everything she’s done professionally into one company and platform that is built to help veterans find meaningful careers.
In her spare time, Christman loves to travel the world and conduct reconnaissance missions to find the next good bottle of wine for her and her husband.
